ONSITE PIANO MOVING
within your home or property...or onto your
trailer or moving truck
YOU WILL NEED THE FOLLOWING GEAR FOR SECURING YOUR PIANO ONTO YOUR TRUCK
GRAND PIANOS:
ONE - grand piano skidboard, long enough to fit your grand piano
SIX - 2"+ wide ratchet straps ( 3
for securing piano to skidboard, 3 for
securing piano/board combination to the truck )
12 - moving pads, thick tufted/quilted type pads
1 roll of cellophane wrap (optional, but helps keep various items from
getting lost)
WHAT DO THESE ITEMS COST?
Grand piano skidboards are about $300
Here is a link to one for $285

An alternative is one of my shop-made skidboards, which I would sell for $100.
They are sturdy, and are supported by perpendicular 2x4 'skid feet'
which raise the piano about 1.5" off the flloor of the truck.
If there happens to be a spill for example, that is an advantage.
The heavy straps are usually $19.95 at Lowes or Home
Depot
here is a link to the type of strap I would recommend:

Moving pads, heavy, quilted type:
Here is a site that rents them, not sure if that's such a great deal,
but these are the type:

You want to avoid using the fleece blanket type that you get from
U-Haul......not thick enough for safe piano moving.
I have seen some similar at Lowes and Home Depot, for about $15 each. for about $15 each.
Shrink wrap plastic roll:

I've gotten this at Staples in the past.
A word about the truck you rent:
You need to be sure that the type of truck you rent has proper anchors
that will work with the straps you buy.
Some trucks have wooden rails, which can work with the J-type hook
straps pictured in the above link.
Some trucks have E-Trac which is a metal track with rectangular slots,
that only accept E-Trac type straps.
(My truck is outfitted with E-Trac, as it is a very convenient and
strong system.)
Some trucks have blank walls, with a few rings here and there.
That is good for tying down pallets, but NOT good for piano or
household moving.
Most likely a rental truck will have either wooden slats or rings.
Hope this info helps.
When it comes to moving a 700lb+ piece of fine furniture across the
country, you want to overdo it in terms of preventive packing.
